Gunnison River

The Gunnison River starts off its source from the world famous Rocky Mountains before travelling one hundred and eighty miles and emptying into the Colorado River as one of its tributaries *the fifth largest tribuatary of the Colorado River).

The rivers source is two thousand four hundred and forty one metres above sea level and the river has a total watershed of seven thousand nine hundred and twenty eighty square miles.

On its travels the Gunnison River passes through the large cities of Gunnison from where its name derives and Grand Junction. The river also has tributaries of its own which are Cimarron River, Uncompahgre River and Tomichi Creek.

At its largest width the river is a huge 300 metres wide.

The majority of the river is only navigable by small boats because of the fast and powerful current although large vessels can navigate the Gunnison below the Black Canyon (parts of the Black Canyon are unnavigable).
