Zambezi River

The Zambezi River is the thirty first longest river in the world and the fourth longest in Africa.

Starting its life Near Mwinilunga in Zambia the Zambezi River flows for 2,574 two thousand five hundred and seventy four kilometres (one thousand six hundred miles). Through its journey the Zambezi passes through the countries of Zambia and Angola but also forms the border with Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe before emptying in to the Indian Ocean.

Because of its size the Zambezi has a huge basin area covering one million three hundred and ninety thousand square kilometres (five hundred and thirty seven thousand square miles).

One of the most well known features on the river is the immense Victoria Falls, a beautiful set of waterfalls that are among the largest in the world and is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

The Zambezi has sixteen large tributaries feeding the river at different intervals in its journey to the sea.

Throughout its length the river supports an abundant amount of wildlife from the huge Hippopotamus to smaller aquatic life. Because of this the river is an important eco system supporting a huge area of the African continent.

The river is only used for boats on short stretches as there are rapids and waterfalls at intermittent areas of the river.

River Oder

The Oder River is found in central Europe and starts of at its source at Oderské vrchy in Silesiai, the Czech Republic before travelling through the west of Poland and forming the boundary between Poland and Germany.

At the end of its journey the River Oder flows into the Szczecin Lagoon before emptying in Baltic Sea.

The Oder River is eight hundred and fifty four kilometres long with one hundred and twelve kilometres being in the Czech Republic and the remaining seven hundred and forty two kilometres in Poland.

The majority of the river is navigable by boat, only the early part at its source is not navigable. Close to the rivers mouth where it flows into the Szczecin Lagoon and passes the city of Szczecin where there is a major maritime port on the river.

Jefferson River

Found in the state of Montana the Jefferson River starts off its life in the Twin Bridges area of the state before flowing seventy seven miles (one hundred and twenty four kilometres) down stream to form a tributary of the Missouri River.

The Jefferson River is formed at its source by the convergence of the Beaverhead River, The Boulder River and the Big Hole River.

Through its journey the river isn’t extremely wide or deep but does carry a lot of aquatic life such as Otters and also Trout and other fish.

It ends its life at the Missouri River near Three Forks not too far from the city of Bozeman.

For its full journey the river travels through some beautiful and almost wild lands that make the river a majestic site to visit. The river never leaves the state of Montana for its full length.

The river is a Grade I river and has many organisations wishing to protect the river and surrounding environments.

Yarlung Zangbo River

The Yarlung Zangbo river starts of its life near the South Tibet Valley and Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon.

On its journey the river passes through Tibet in to India where its name changes and it becomes known by the name Dihang. At the end of its journey in India the Yarlung Zangbo River finishes its life as a tributary of the Nyang River.


The Yarlung Zangbo river has two records, these are that it is the worlds highest major river (there are some higher small tributaries) and it also passes through the worlds largest and deepest canyon call the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon.

Because of the height at which the river lives it is quite a inhospitable area meaning that many people do not get to see the full wonder of this great river during its journey in the Tibet region.

In total the river is two thousand and fifty seven kiloemetres in length making it the sixth largest river in China.

Denmark River

You would be forgiven for thinking that the Denmark River is in Denmark, but it is actually in Australia.

The source of the river is found near Pardelup in the Great Sourthern region. From its source the river travels sixty kilometres (thirty seven miles) before finishing at Wilson Inlet, which is a part of the Hay River.

There are two tributaries that feed the Denmark river, these are the Scotsdale Brook and Cleerillup Creek.

The river gets its name from the physician Dr Alexander Denmark who was the physician of the British Fleet. The name was given by the rivers founder called Dr Thomas Braidwood Wilson who found the Denmark River in 1829 as he was on a journey of discovery while waiting for his ship to be repaired.

The river has a total basin area of eight hundred square kilometres.

Venta River

The Venta River starts of its source near the city of Kuršėnai in the county of Šiauliai, Lithuania.

The Venta river is approximately three hundred and forty six kilometres in length and is split equally in length between the countries of Lithuania and Latvia.

The basin area is split differently with sixty six percent being in Latvia. The total basin area of the river is eleven thousand eight hundred square kilometres.

On its journey the river flows from north western Lithuania passing through the city of Mažeikiai before acting as a natural border between Lithuania and Latvia. At this point the river then moves through western Lativa passing through the cities of Kuldīga and Ventspils before finishing at the Baltic Sea.

There are three large tributaries that feed the Venta River, these are the Virvyčia, Varduva and Abava.
