River Danube

The River Danube is a very important river that is the longest in the EU and second longest in Europe after the Volga that is found in Russia.

The Danube starts of its life at its source in Martinskapelle in the Black Forest, Germany it then travels for a total of two thousand eight hundred and sixty kilometres (one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven miles) before finishing at the Black Sea.

During its journey the Danube passes through the countries of Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. For alot of these countries the Danube acts as a natural land boundary.


The Danube passes through the important cities of Ulm, Regensburg and Passau in Germany, Vienna in Austria, Bratislava in Slovakia, Budapest in Hungary, Vukovar in Croatia, Novi Sad and Belgrade in Serbia, Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Vidin, Giurgiu and Măcin in Romania, Svishtov, Rousse, and Silistra in Bulgaria.

Tributaries to the Danube and the basin area for the river stretch even further and support a great number of other cities and towns.

Because of its importance to all the countries it passes through the Danube features heavily in their history from music like the waltz by Johann Strauss entitled An der schönen, blauen Donau (On the Beautiful Blue Danube) to the Bulgarian national anthem.
